The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language ability of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. The exam uses a nine-band scale to identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).
There are two different types of the IELTS exam; General and Academic. Both versions provide an accurate assessment of the four English language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
IELTS is available at more than 1,100 locations worldwide, and there are 48 test dates per year.
